Chapter Fifteen

Kane

Somewhere Outside of Achavanich, Scottish Highlands

In his tented domain, Kane sat in silent contemplation, his eyes closed and his breathing slow and measured. The room around him was dark, the only light emanating from a single candle that flickered on the table before him. The shadows seemed to dance and writhe in the corners, as if alive with a malevolent energy that mirrored the darkness within Kane’s own soul.

For hours, he had been probing Rowan’s mind, seeking a way to manipulate her thoughts and actions without her knowledge. The Nyrvallia’s gifts, bestowed upon him, had granted him new powers, abilities that even he had not fully comprehended. But with each passing day, each whispered incantation and blood-soaked ritual, he could feel his strength growing, his connection to the darkness deepening.

And now, as he sat in the stillness of his chamber, Kane reached out with his mind, gently nudging Rowan’s subconscious, planting the seed of an idea, a compulsion that she would not be able to resist. He could feel her stirring, the unease that had haunted her dreams slowly drawing her from the warmth of her bed and the safety of the Tracker’s arms.

Kane smiled, a cruel twist of his lips that held no warmth or joy. He watched through Rowan’s eyes as she padded down the stairs, her bare feet silent on the carpeted steps. He felt the chill of the night air as she stepped outside, the goosebumps that rose on her skin as she rubbed her arms for warmth.

Through Rowan’s gaze, Kane drank in the details of the street, the houses that lined the road, the gardens that bloomed in the darkness. He saw the street sign, the letters illuminated by the pale glow of the streetlights – London Road, Y056 7ZZ. And there, on the door of the house where Rowan had emerged, the brass number seventy two.

Kane’s smile widened, a triumphant gleam in his eyes. He had them now, the girl and the Tracker, and there would be no escape. With a final, lingering caress of Rowan’s mind, he withdrew, his consciousness snapping back into his own body like a rubber band.

The candle on the table guttered and died, plunging the room into darkness. But Kane hardly noticed, his thoughts consumed by the knowledge he had gained and the plan that was already forming in his mind.

He rose from his chair, his movements fluid and graceful despite the long hours of meditation. With a snap of his fingers, the canvas parted, revealing the hulking form of Rivik waiting beyond.

“You have news, Commander?” the Fallen asked, his voice low and rough like the grinding of gravel.

Kane nodded. His eyes glinted with a feverish light. “I have the location of the girl and the Tracker. They are hiding in a house on a London Road, protected by the Tracker’s friends.”

Rivik’s lips curled into a sneer, his disdain for the humans who would dare to stand against them evident in every line of his face. “Then let us go and retrieve them, Commander.
